I have always been greatly impressed by the professionalism of Sam, Rob and the team at GetSmarter. It has been a pleasure to work with such a dynamic and passionate group of individuals. When it comes to teaching and learning you will be hard pressed to find a more committed group of people.
To understand what GetSmarter does first hand, I enrolled for the UCT Internet Super-User course and found it to be a rewarding experience. The online teaching and learning system, course material and the level of interaction that was facilitated were astounding. They are able, even with the lack of face-to-face contact, to establish a real sense of community amongst the participants and also create high levels of enthusiasm and motivation to learn. With GetSmarter learning really is fun.

I have been working with GetSmarter since 2008 when we started our collaboration with the Sectional Title Scheme Management course. I am pleased to say that the collaboration with Law@Work has increased to such an extent that we now offer five legal courses. All courses offered in conjunction with Law@Work are high quality and supported by lecturers in the Law Faculty.
GetSmarter has a winning formula – quality online education that is easily accessible, with top-class support. I am privileged to be working with them and to be living up to UCT’s mission to be an outstanding university, educating for life and addressing the challenges facing our society.
Irena Wasserfall, Law@Work Manager
The Information Systems department was the first in the Commerce faculty to work with GetSmarter. I was immediately infected by the enthusiasm and energy of Sam and the GetSmarter team. It has really been a win-win cooperation. For instance, we are seeing lots of best practices in how GetSmarter runs its online courses and we can use some of those ideas in our Vula-based courses. I really love the GetSmarter vision and willingness to release the Internet Super-User textbook under a Creative Commons license. Here’s hoping you keep getting smarter in 2012 and beyond!
Jean-Paul van Belle, Head of Department, Information Systems
From 1 January 2012, the Department of Accounting will become the College of Accounting. As part of its vision “to be a centre of excellence in accounting education”, the College aims to provide excellent continuing business learning opportunities to practitioners through short courses. We believe that the online learning model used by GetSmarter is extremely effective and may well be the preferred learning model of busy professionals. We therefore hope to grow our already good working relationship with GetSmarter with the introduction of new courses and other online activities in the new year.
Mark Graham, Head of Department, Accounting
I’ve been working with GetSmarter for a number of years. There is a very real need for working adults who may have missed the tertiary boat or simply want to expand their repertoire of skills to sign up for high-quality, benchmarked courses that they can do while working. I was delighted that the Professional Presentation Skills course was, with the aid of podcasts and video, a really participative, hands-on experience. I look forward to the new professional communication and management course coming online in 2012.
Terri Grant, Head of the Professional Communications Unit
