GetSmarter experienced a very busy start to the year. Our portfolio grew to seven courses, all of which were lined up to start during the first 3 months.

Our student intake per course generally varies between 100 and 160 people, which meant that the marketing team was given the task of identifying, informing, and convincing approximately 900 people to sign up for our courses — all within 3 months!

Thembi MoyoIt’s hard not to be inspired by Thembi Moyo’s story. The 48-year-old Zimbabwean fled her country when the situation became dire some years ago and became an asylum seeker in South Africa. She works two jobs to support her family, as a general office admin during the week and as a house cleaner on Saturdays. Despite her unfortunate circumstances, she still has the drive to dream big: Thembi wants to own and run her own guest house. And she’s making it happen.

A little bit about Dave
Dave-Brendon de Burgh, 28 years old.Dave-Brendon de Burgh
I was born in Krugersdorp on what used to be Paul Kruger Day (the 10th of October) and this year my birthday falls on 10/10/10. I was too lazy in school to get the marks I needed to study, but if I could turn back time and get the marks I would probably study Graphic Design and Journalism.

I am a complete and utter Fantasy and Science Fiction nut! I’m also obsessed with reading and amassing the most awesome collection of SFF-novels; ask anyone who knows me and they’ll tell you I’m always reading. I’ve also promised myself that I will never act my age (my shoe-size is eleven); I just don’t want to ‘grow up’ at the expense of my passions.

Lawyer and Course Convener

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
I’m a born and bred Capetonian who has lived in Cape Town all my life bar one ‘gap year’ spent working and travelling overseas before I started studying. I studied law at UCT and have just completed my law articles. I am getting admitted as an attorney in the High Court on the 16th of April.

How long have you been working at GetSmarter / Paddocks
Officially 2 years and 4 months but since it is my family’s business I have been around for a lot longer than that.

Andi Friedman, Managing Director of Clyral - Web and Mobile Software Development

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

I am a computer engineer. After leaving University I worked for a corporate IT company in the high tech and computer sector until the entrepreneurial bug bit. I left to co-found Clyral. I've been the Managing Director there for just over 4 years and during that time it has grown to a staff compliment of 16 people.
