It is important to remember the fundamental difference between traditional media and new social media. Traditional media is like your father when you arrive home late from a party. He gives you a lecture on what is good for you and what you should not do but doesn’t give you a chance to respond. Billboards, TV and radio all have the same mentality; they keep pushing adverts but they don’t provide you with a platform to respond.
Social Media on the other hand is like your cocktail party because interaction and feedback is encouraged. The most important aspect of social media is to increase the visibility of your brand, services and product.

By Jennifer Paddock Below are 9 steps that will help you start or improve your email campaign.
1. Email campaign strategic planning
Your
first step is to plan the goals you wish to achieve as your email
campaign will act as a tool to help you achieve these goals.
Promotional emails often have immediate goals behind them such as
encouraging recipients to make purchases or to request further
information. You will also need to decide on your Key Performance
Indicators (KPIs) for your campaign, examples include open rate,
click-through rate, number of emails forwarded and return on investment
(ROI).

These days mobile phones are used to perform the functions of alarm
clocks, cameras, video recorders, MP3 players, calendars, diaries,
notebooks, messaging devices and voice call devices. However the
reasons above are not the reasons that make mobile phones truly
remarkable devices for marketers, it is for these seven reasons set out
below…
1. The mobile is personal
A survey conducted in 2006 (”Wireless Works” by BBO and Proximity) found that 63% of respondents would not share their phone with anyone.
In Japan that percentage was 90! This means that generally marketers
can contact the users of mobile phones directly. However, marketers
must respect the privacy of mobile phone owners and should only contact
them via this device if they have their permission.

We have asked one of our past students a few questions... Hilary Clarke, co-owner with my husband, of Anchor’s Rest, Hermanus.
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself? My husband and I have been in the industry for 15 years, starting with 1 small self catering room in Knysna where we were then living. It started more as a hobby than anything – it was never our intention to become a full time accommodation establishment. Somehow it just grew. But Knysna was just too far away from children and grandchildren! So we returned to Hermanus after a 15 year absence and together with my husband Guy we established Anchor’s Rest as a guest house at the end of 2006. We now own a 4 bedroomed guest house (with self catering ) and basically we were self taught.

By Jennifer Paddock Step 1: Know Yourself and Know Your Market "Yourself" in this context refers to the organisation as a whole. The first thing to ensure before embarking on the creation of a marketing strategy is to know who "you" are. This may need to be addressed time and time again as the organisation changes through expansion or the introduction of new products. Ask yourself the following questions:
