Will Edgcumbe gave Greta Edgcumbe the gift of education last festive season.
What's the story?
I would like to nominate Greta Edgcumbe to stand a chance to win the University of Cape Town (Law@Work) Start and Manage a Small Business course. Eighteen months ago my wife, Greta, started a small business called Fox & Locket, designing and making beautiful hand made bags, which she started selling to people in America, Australia, Europe and Singapore online (on www.etsy.com) and in a few local South African boutiques. She had an awesome response, but due to the pressures of her full-time job and other commitments (like her weird husband), she had to put Fox & Locket on the back burner.
We're moving to Cape Town in a few weeks(!) where the plan is to establish our own little businesses full time. It's scary, but really exciting. Greta is going to be able to finally give Fox & Locket the attention it deserves.
Being able to do the "UCT (Law@Work) Start and Manage a Small Business" course will help her immeasurably, and she'll be able to pass on some of this valuable knowledge to the people she works with.
And that's the awesome thing - Greta wants her business to benefit people by providing one of the greatest needs in our country: employment, even if it makes a difference to only a few. She wants to help people who are currently unemployed to develop skills they can use to provide for themselves even beyond working for Fox & Locket. We've heard that the most growth in creating jobs in our country is actually done by small businesses. Small businesses are really important, so it's vital for them to be run well and to develop their employees into skilled members of the work force.
Fox & Locket is also a one for one business, meaning that for every handbag sold, a book bag with a book is donated to an underprivileged child in our country.
Greta has the seed of an amazing small business - let's help her make it grow!
