GetSmarter experienced a very busy start to the year. Our portfolio grew to seven courses, all of which were lined up to start during the first 3 months.
Our student intake per course generally varies between 100 and 160 people, which meant that the marketing team was given the task of identifying, informing, and convincing approximately 900 people to sign up for our courses — all within 3 months!
The GetSmarter marketing team consists of three enthusiastic, dedicated and hard-working individuals - Karin, Deborah and Kate (who also markets for our Paddocks brand) – and is headed by myself, Robyn.

GetSmarter marketing team: Deborah, Kate, Karin and Robyn
We have learned a tremendous amount since January. Here are just some of the important marketing lessons we’ve come away with:
- Believe in what you are selling and be confident in assuring the customer.
- Prioritise. Complete urgent tasks first and move down the list. Ticking off tasks from the list helps to show that you are making progress.
- Communication is key, especially when working in a team. Use regular emails, meetings, status updates, etc.
- Address people personally and always try to remember a person's name when talking to them or liaising via email. If possible, try to remember what involvement you have had with them in the past and refer to that.

- Wrap up meetings and confirm the action points of a meeting when it’s over.
- Be honest. Don’t just say what the customer wants to hear. Be honest about what you are selling. Either the product is for them, or it’s not.
- Treat every query – either telephone or email – as extremely important. Realise that someone has taken the time to contact you.
- Smile when you are on the phone. People can hear that you are smiling and that you are enthusiastic about your product.
- Exceed Expectations. Offer more than customers expect. It is amazing what that can do.
- Keeping your promise. If you said that you would send the email in the next 10 minutes, try to keep to that.
- Learn from your mistakes. You are going to make some – it is human nature. As long as you can learn from them and try not to make the same mistakes, then you are on the right path.
- And of course, most importantly, “Teamwork makes the dream work!”
