The tasting of wines for certification or export is done by tasting panels consisting of 5 tasters. To qualify as a taster, individuals need to pass the certificate course in wine evaluation offered by the University of Stellenbosch. Consequently anybody, irrespective of career, age, race or gender can serve as a panel member. Presently panels consist of winemakers, production personnel, educators and members of the public. The central panel, who also advises the Wine and Spirits Board on technical issues, taste in Stellenbosch. Decentralised panels, consisting of tasters from a specific district, also taste in Robertson, Worcester, Paarl, Vredendal and Stellenbosch.

Many business owners in the hospitality industry believe that if they give free liquor to their clients they will not need a license. This is false. You need a license if you are going to supply liquor to the public, whether you charge for it or not.
Because of changes to the National Liquor Act, the provinces are now responsible for all retail liquor licensing in South Africa. If you need to apply for a liquor license, you will now need to deal with the Liquor Board in the province where your business is situated. Every province will compile and regulate their own liquor laws. The respective regulations will determine the application fees and the format of the application forms.

Writers are often in almost superstitious awe of the story. It is an ancient fear of the taleteller, of the witch doctor or shaman who told us long tales around the campfire back in the Paleolithic age. We think of blind Homer, and the prophets at Delphi. We believe that, like them, the novelist or short story-teller must have some profound connection with an ethereal ‘story world’, a world that in ancient times foretold the fall of kings or, today, brings in millions from Hollywood. We believe that stories seem to flow out of authors like water gushes from a faucet, or arrive on paper like Athena who popped out of Zues’s head, fully formed and perfect. We feel as authors we might do better on the mountaintop, waiting for divine inspiration. Or we wait for the story to form itself completely in our minds before writing a word.

It is believed that “wines are made in the vineyard” implying that the grapes are the decisive factor in wine style and quality. The French wine tradition has two very interesting concepts supporting this philosophy, namely vigneron and terroir.
Vigneron = Literally translated means winegrower, which combines the
roles of the grape producer and winemaker
Terroir = is the
environment influencing the vines and the quality and composition of
the grapes for winemaking. Topography, climate, geology and
soil are the key factors determining the terroir, which can in layman’s
terms be seen as the site of the vine. The different key factors can
obviously be described in more detail like altitude, slope, aspect,
temperature, rainfall, sunlight, wind and soil characteristics.
