The Course Convener for the Random House Struik Creative Writing course, Ron Irwin, was invited to present a talk on creative writing for the Western Cape Writers’ Circle.
Ron, presented the talk on various aspects of writing, spoke about good versus bad writing, perfect moments and characters and how to start a story by enticing the reader. Ron illustrated his points with many examples from classic literature.
Tamara Vieira, who is a past student of the Random House Struik Creative Writing course, organised the event. For each
monthly meeting, the Western Cape Writers’ Circle gets together and listens to a speaker who provides guidance, words of wisdom or just interesting stories. The group consists of 75 members who range from young to old and novice to experienced writers – but all have a common passion for the written word.
The group was particularly interested in how to get published, one of the many topics that is covered in the Random House Struik Creative Writing course. Ron is a gifted speaker and educator; in Ron’s words, he has trained “students, engineers, retired people, a bar owner, housewives, lawyers, librarians, reporters, an explorer, biographers, autobiographers, a children’s book writer, film makers, businessmen, businesswomen, a doctor, a person recovering from Internet addiction, a homeless person, a professor, a biologist, numerous grandmothers and a drug dealer who felt his experiences would make a good novel.”
