Kim Baxon is the lucky winner of a recent Career Times competition that gave her a spot on the University of Cape Town (CFMS) Feature Writing course presented by GetSmarter in conjunction with UCT’s Centre for Film and Media Studies (CFMS).

Kim BaxonAs someone who enjoys expressing her creativity through writing, she is delighted to have this wonderful opportunity.

Born in Durban but now a confirmed Capetonian, she describes herself as “an explorer at heart on a constant quest to find the things which add meaning to life”.

She loves discovering new activities and ideas and strives to “inspire and change the lives of others” through the fulfilment of her purpose.

She lives life to the full, taking part in various sports, travelling, enjoying good food and spending quality time with her loved ones. She believes in “the power of taking the road less travelled” and is always ready for a new adventure.

She is thrilled to be taking part in the Feature Writing course. Her mother is a teacher, so Kim started reading at an early age and learned to respect the power of the written word.

Now she loves not only reading, but also sharing her ideas through writing, and as she hasn’t had any formal writing training, she looks forward to honing her current skills and learning some new ones on the course.

The UCT (CFMS) Feature Writing course

The UCT (CFMS) Feature Writing course is a 10-week part-time course that is offered entirely online. Students learn skills such as how to choose a viable story idea, conduct research and interviews, edit their work and submit it for publication.

The Convener, André Wiesner, guides students through the entire process of researching, writing and editing a feature story, drawing on his own experience as an award-winning journalist.

Kim believes that studying online is a great way to learn, as it gives you “the freedom and flexibility of continued learning and expanding your knowledge base without the restriction of having to be physically present at a particular venue.”

According to Kim, online learning is the future: “In this ever-changing world, where knowledge is power, it provides an easy and accessible way of staying abreast and empowered.”

Once she has the course under her belt, she would like to set up a blog as well as submit her writing for print publication or even apply for writing jobs. She can’t wait to try out her new skills and thanks Career Times and GetSmarter for this opportunity.
