It has emerged that 85% of South African parliamentarians are computer and web-illiterate. During a session of Parliament on Tuesday 11 May 2010, chairman Obed Bapela stated that, “We cannot have MPs that cannot access the Internet.” He added that MPs needed to engage with constituents online through social networking.
GetSmarter and University of Cape Town (UCT) are seeking to remedy this deficiency by offering parliamentarians 20 complimentary places (to the value of R110 000) on the UCT Internet Super-User course. The part-time, ten-week course aims to transform web beginners into confident internet users. The course covers everything from basic web search to advanced online research, cellphone browsing and social networking on Facebook and Twitter. Those parliamentarians who are embarrassed about their lack of skill need not worry – the course is conducted entirely online and can be completed from the comfort of their homes or offices. GetSmarter is the leading online training company in South Africa and has educated over 2000 students in the past year. The company is committed to increasing web literacy throughout the country, and has developed the UCT Internet Super-User course – the only one of its kind – to further this aim. Obed Bapela has received the proposal and is reviewing it.

You may have heard about PayPal in the local news recently, because First National Bank has finally made the service available to South Africans. What’s all the fuss about? Should you be using PayPal?
About Paypal
Essentially, PayPal is a service that allows you to transfer and receive money online. It can be used whenever you want to buy goods from an online store, or if you want to pay somebody overseas for a service rendered – or vice versa, if employers and buyers want to pay you. It works very much like a virtual bank account: you store money in it, you can use that money to pay for online goods and services, and others can deposit money into it for any goods or services they purchase from you.

UCT and GetSmarter are creating more Internet Super-Users
The University of Cape Town and GetSmarter, a leading online training company, are pleased to present the second run of the popular part-time UCT Internet Super-User course. The 10-week distance-learning course is intended to teach novice and intermediate Internet users how to get the most out of online communication, research and business tools. The course, which starts on the 20th of September 2010, is presented entirely online via GetSmarter’s tried and tested Internet training platform.

- Facebook claims that 50% of active users log into the site each day. This would mean at least 175m users every 24 hours…
- Twitter now has 75m user accounts, but only around 15m are active users on a regular basis. It’s still a fair increase from the estimated 6-10m global users from a few months ago.
