Internet | YouTube launches South African site
By Anna Malczyk The famous online video sharing website YouTube has just launched a new website for South African users. Local web browsers can now visit www.youtube.co.za to watch their favourite videos.
What is YouTube? YouTube is a website where anyone in the world can upload and watch videos. It’s one of the largest video sharing sites in the world: 24 hours worth of video are uploaded every minute. It is immensely popular in the online community, who watch over a billion videos every day. Videos can be about any topic imaginable - from home clips to music videos an parody animations.
What does the new SA page mean for us? The South African version is significant for local web users because it allows the videos to load much more quickly, improving the viewing experience. Previously, it would often take longer to load a video than it would to watch it. Now, hopefully, users will be able to stream the video instantly. In addition, there will be a bigger focus on local content, allowing local video producers to create national exposure for themselves. On a more abstract level, this new service indicates that Google, who owns YouTube, is beginning to see South African web users as significant and important media consumers. This may lead to greater, faster and better services for South Africa overall. What’s coming in the future?
There has been a lot of news recently about innovative new viewing platforms coming to South Africa: the changeover from analogue to digital TV broadcasting, high definition and Blu-Ray video, the new DStv On Demand service and the first inklings of IPTV (internet TV). The new YouTube page, which has been developed with companies such as SABC, looks to be a part of this trend. Soon, we may be able to watch episodes of our favourite local shows straight over YouTube!
